The future of Africa Fashion - Export Trade.

In the Africa Fashion Industry, we are streamlined into focusing on production, sales, styling, designing. All these are very vital but we need to consider how the industry can move from a million to a billion.  Fashion is all encompassing, it includes footwears, jewleries, textile, handbags, cosmetics and clothing industry. IG @tomiscolourpavilon Alot of Africa Countries are on the pedestal of primarily importing from the developed countries . Export Trade is very vital for the growth of the Africa Fashion Industry.  I definitely love the whole sew and fit idea, when I say sew and fit, i mean clothes or items which are made to suit a particular individual, we need to think Beyond that level, I am sure a lot of individuals have become millionaires as a result of working on sew and fit. That's fine. But why would you decide to settle for less? The Fashion Industry is an industry with great potentials,  It is essential that this potentials are maximize...

The Fashion Business Contracts...

The contract saga between the Nigerian  G-Worldwide Entertainment Company and Oluwatobiloba Daniel Anidugbe also know as Kiss Daniel has been all over the internet for weeks now.  If you are not aware of the story, I will be dropping the summarised coded gist. Based on Available media reports, the relevant facts are that  Kiss Daniel entered into a seven years agreement with the G-world-wide entertainment company,  but then a few weeks ago- whilst the contract still existed- he unilaterally announced the termination of the agreement.   Moral lesson-  Before signing any contract make sure you read and understand the terms and conditions. I will like to drop the whole story but this post is primarily for fashion businesses. Behind the scene of every fashion business, every fashion show, reams of legal contracts bind together designers, manufacturers, suppliers, retailers, models, photographers, make up artists, the list is endless. Susan Scafidi, ...

The Future of Africa Fashion- ERADICATING COUNTERFEIT FASHION

I am so excited to start the   AFL end of the year series, the series is called The Future of Africa Fashion series. While studying on a fateful day, I thought to myself the Africa Fashion Industry has every capacity to grow and it can contribute to the economic growth of countries in Africa. The Fashion Industry is embedded with great potentials but there are some aspects which need to be eradicated or curbed and some aspects which need to be developed. The Future of Africa Fashion Series primarily focuses on the development of the Africa Fashion industry. The focal point of this post is the eradication of counterfeit fashion/counterfeiting. Counterfeit fashion refers to fake clothing, accessory, footwear, handbags, cosmetics of major brands. Counterfeiting is ultimately an infringement of the legal rights of an owner of an intellectual property. Stealing of original ideas is the worst form of theft in the fashion industry. It is a common attitude for law enforcement a...

Inspiration versus Imitation

In the past few days, a particular design has been trending on the internet thanks to the creative work of a Nigerian Designer "Ugomonye".  When I saw the piece which was worn by a Nigerian Celebrity, Ebuka to the BAAD wedding, I was happy that there was a creative mind who could come up with such an idea. The designer launched the design at the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2017. It has been barely five days since the BAAD wedding and the imitators are already working on the design. If as a designer, you are a pro imitator, the least you can do is acknowledge the brand whose work you have imitated. Fashion relies primarily on inspiration. It is important that I differentiate Imitation from Inspiration. A lot of individuals copy and say it was inspired, nope it is better you use the word imitated. Imitation is the production of identical copies of the substantial copying of another's artistic work. Imitation is the replication of the pattern, cut, c...

Toju Foyeh's derivative work

We all have been waiting for the BAAD2017 wedding. The wedding was all glitz and glam as every Nigerian celebrity attended the wedding in style. The couple of the day definitely stood out. Mrs. Adesua Wellington definitely slayed in all the dresses she wore.. Kudos to the renowned Fashion Designer Toju Foyeh.  The dress which the bride wore for her first outing was referred to as "copied" by the US based Nigeria designer, Segun Gele. He called out Toju Foyeh on his instagram page: Fashion designing is about originality. It is about the unique expression of a designer. It is primary to note that what can make a design unique can be tricky. The design by Toju Foyeh can be called a derivative work and not a copied work. There are clear differences between the two designs. In fashion, certain similarities might look like copying. Fashion designing is based on evolved designs so there really is no new design under the Sun, just designs with alteration. Fortunately, the la...

License agreement in fashion..

The importance of a license agreement cannot be over emphasized. I am  sure you wondering, what a license agreement means? In legal terms,  A lincense agreement is a legal contract between two parties, known as the licensor and the licensee. Are you aware that for many companies, licensing is an opportunity to expand, you go sky rocket with licensing. Licensing can increase a brands reach, audience and revenue through royalties. You might ask, what part does a license agreement play in fashion? For every fashion business, a license agreement can be used. In fashion, Licensing means when a brand gives permission to a company to use their name on a merchandise. While I was making my research, I thought to myself "why would a brand decide to license out their name?" As a brand owner you want to increase your brand value and revenue, then you should consider licensing. Brands frequently license out the name of their companies to produce unique goods which require ...

The AFL Review- The GTB fashion weekend 2017

Welcome to Lagos, the city of opportunities, the center of excellence, the innovative city. I am so proud to be African, to be Nigerian. It is amazing that we are gradually stepping into the future.. The Guarantee Trust Bank fashion weekend took place on the 11th and 12th of November. It felt as if I was on the streets of London but I was at the landmark event center Victoria Island. GTB definitely transformed the landmark event center and they brought the streets of London to Lagos, Nigeria . .kudos to  the guarantee trust bank. The Fashion weekend comprised of a fashion sales exhibition,  a fashion masterclass and a fashion show. I stepped into the event centre with high expectations and I was not disappointed  at all. There were various merchants  from textile merchants, to food merchants, to fashion retailers...I wish I could go back in time...just to experience the beauty again. Well I guess I will just look forward to the 2019 fashion weekend. T...

HLFDW experience: The fashion business series review.

October definitely ended in an amazing way, I had the privilege to attend the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2017. It took place in one of the most beautiful locations in Nigeria. If you have not been to Eko Atlantic in Lagos, pack your bags *asap*, you need to experience the beauty. The Fashion Week was for four days but as a knowledge junkie I was at the Fashion Business Series from day two to day four. The business series gave me crazy chills, at the end of each day I felt extra smart.   The Fashion Business Series was primarily about the future of fashion in relations to technology and the economy.   I will love to give you a load down of all the knowledge I got from Sissi Johnson, Asiyami Gold, Mark Van Iterson,  Sara Maino, Cosmas Maduka, Omoyemi Akerele, Masimba Biriwasha, Tony Elemelu, Obi, Mode Aderinokun and the other amazing speakers but as you know nothing comes for free. I am just joking, don't panic. I had the privilege to listen to Cosma...
