Inspiration versus Imitation

In the past few days, a particular design has been trending on the internet thanks to the creative work of a Nigerian Designer "Ugomonye".  When I saw the piece which was worn by a Nigerian Celebrity, Ebuka to the BAAD wedding, I was happy that there was a creative mind who could come up with such an idea. The designer launched the design at the Heineken Lagos Fashion and Design Week 2017. It has been barely five days since the BAAD wedding and the imitators are already working on the design. If as a designer, you are a pro imitator, the least you can do is acknowledge the brand whose work you have imitated. Fashion relies primarily on inspiration. It is important that I differentiate Imitation from Inspiration. A lot of individuals copy and say it was inspired, nope it is better you use the word imitated. Toju Foyeh's derivative work

We all have been waiting for the BAAD2017 wedding. The wedding was all glitz and glam as every Nigerian celebrity attended the wedding in style. The couple of the day definitely stood out. Mrs. Adesua Wellington definitely slayed in all the dresses she wore.. Kudos to the renowned Fashion Designer Toju Foyeh.  The dress which the bride wore for her first outing was referred to as "copied" by the US based Nigeria designer, Segun Gele. He called out Toju Foyeh on his instagram page: Fashion designing is about originality. It is about the unique expression of a designer. It is primary to note that what can make a design unique can be tricky. The design by Toju Foyeh can be called a derivative work and not a copied work. There are clear differences between the two designs. In fashion, certain similarities might look like copying.
